ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) β€” The Dallas Cowboys’ six-game winning streak has ended with a 20-17 loss to Washington. The Cowboys went four-and-out on their only overtime series after Kai Forbath hit a 40-yard field goal. Dallas fell to 6-2 despite DeMarco Murray, who ran for 141 yards and had four receptions for 80 yards.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) β€” New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has announced that quarterback Michael Vick will start over Geno Smith in Sunday’s game against the Chiefs in Kansas City. Smith threw interceptions on the Jets’ first three possessions Sunday before Vick fumbled twice and was picked off once in a 43-23 loss to Buffalo. The Jets have lost seven straight since a season-opening victory against the winless Oakland Raiders.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) β€” The Giants and Royals went through off-day workouts yesterday in preparation for Game 6 of the World Series tonight in Kansas City. The Giants took a three-games-to-two lead with Sunday’s 5-0 win over the Royals in San Francisco. Madison Bumgarner has held the Royals to one run and seven hits in 16 innings while winning two games in the series.

PITTSBURGH (AP) β€” Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta (OH’-lee MAH’-tah) will have thyroid surgery next week to remove a potentially cancerous tumor that was discovered during a preseason physical. Maatta underwent further tests before team doctors came to a diagnosis. He is scheduled to miss four weeks but is cleared to play until the surgery.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) β€” NCAA President Mark Emmert says findings from a recent investigation into academic fraud at the University of North Carolina are troubling, disturbing and shocking. While Emmert said he would withhold final judgment until the NCAA completes its own investigation, the usually cautious former university president was downright blunt during a 20-minute interview with The Associated Press at its Indianapolis headquarters. Emmert says “this is a case that potentially strikes at the heart of what higher education is about.”
