CHARLOTTE, N.C.- A suspect is dead after opening fire on authorities in Lincolnton Friday morning.

It all started after a Lincolnton Police Department Sergeant responded to 876 Salem Church Road just after 6pm Thursday, where a deceased female was found. Authorities have ruled that death a homicide.

Two detectives responded to Colonial Village Apartments to speak with the female’s estranged husband. When the Detectives arrived they observed whom they believed to be the victim’s estranged husband driving a gray truck circling the apartment complex.

Authorities say the gray truck pulled into a parking place, but when the officer asked the individual to show his hands, the suspect pulled out a semi-auto handgun and fired at the officer.  The officer returned fire. Neither the suspect nor the officer was injured.

Authorities then say the individual entered an apartment in the Lantern Ridge Apartments. Officers established a perimeter around the apartment and requested the assistance of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team.

Shortly after 12:30am Friday morning, shots were exchanged again and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lincolnton Police Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office have requested the State Bureau of Investigation to look into the shooting at Lantern Ridge Apartments

The Lincolnton Police Department is not releasing the names of the deceased individuals at this time.
