Royals force Game 7
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) β The Kansas City Royals have stretched the World Series to the limit.
The Royals have forced a seventh game by erupting for seven runs in the second inning of a 10-0 rout of the San Francisco Giants. Eight Royals scored a run or drove in a run β or did both β during the rally. Lorenzo Cain hit a two-run single and Eric Hosmer (HAHZ’-mur) added a two-run double before Billy Butler capped the barrage with an RBI double.
Cain went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Mike Moustakas was 2-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Winning pitcher Yordano Ventura was outstanding over seven innings, giving up three hits and five walks with four strikeouts. Jason Frasor and Tim Collins each threw one inning of relief to complete the six-hitter.
Giants starter and loser Jake Peavy (PEE’-vee) was chased in the second, charged with five runs and six hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Jeremy Guthrie starts Wednesday night for Kansas City against Tim Hudson in a rematch of Game 3, won by Kansas City 3-2. The 39-year-old Hudson will become the oldest Game 7 starter in Series history.

Thousands attend Cardinal’s funeral
SOSUA, Dominican Republic (AP) β Thousands of people in the Dominican Republic attended the burial of former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras.
Among those at the funeral Tuesday were Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak (moh-ZAY’-lahk) and manager Mike Matheny (muh-THEE’-nee).
The 22-year-old slugger was considered one of baseball’s top prospects. Taveras hit .239 with three homers and 22 RBIs in 80 games in his only season in the majors.
Taveras died Sunday after authorities say he lost control of his 2014 Chevrolet Camaro. His girlfriend also was killed in the crash.

Jays claim Smoak off waivers
TORONTO (AP) β The Toronto Blue Jays claimed Seattle Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak off waivers. The 27-year-old Smoak appeared in 80 games for the Mariners last season, batting.202 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs.
The former first-round pick of the Texas Rangers in 2008 has spent parts of five seasons in the majors. He’s got a career .224 average with 74 home runs in 566 games.

Canseco accidentally shoots self in hand
LAS VEGAS (AP) β Former major league slugger Jose Canseco is recovering after shooting himself in the hand at his Las Vegas home.
Metro police Lt. Mark Reddon says the former Oakland Athletics outfielder told police he was cleaning his gun in the kitchen when it fired, shooting a finger on his left hand. He was taken to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada.

Bulldogs, ‘Noles, Tigers and Rebels get top 4 nods
UNDATED (AP) β The College Football Playoff selection committee has unveiled the first of seven top 25 rankings. There’s good news for three SEC teams, none of which is Alabama.
Mississippi State and ACC powerhouse Florida State are 1-2 in the ranking. The Bulldogs and Seminoles are two of the last three unbeaten teams left in the FBS. Auburn is third, followed by SEC rival Mississippi to round out the current projected semifinalists for the first FBS playoff.
Oregon is on the outside looking in at No. 5. Alabama is sixth in the ranking after moving up to third in the AP poll.
TCU is seventh, followed by Michigan State, Kansas State and Notre Dame.
The final rankings will be released Dec. 7, the day after the most of the conference championships are decided.

Meyer confirms RB leaves team
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) β Reserve running back Rod Smith has left the 13th-ranked Ohio State team to deal with some personal issues and won’t be coming back.
Coach Urban Meyer confirmed Smith’s departure in an email and told reporters during a Big Ten teleconference that Smith has had issues throughout his time at Ohio State.
Meyer says, “We’re disappointed but we wish him well.”
A team spokesman said Ohio State did not dismiss Smith from the squad.

Lawyer says woman wants Williams investigation to end
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) β The lawyer for the woman involved in the domestic battery investigation of Florida State running back Karlos Williams has asked police to end the investigation, saying the woman never filed a complaint. Florida State spokesman Rob Wilson didn’t immediately confirm whether the university reported the incident or if Florida State would conduct its own investigation of possible student code of conduct violations. Williams has not been charged or arrested, and police say the investigation is ongoing.

Champs are winners in season opener
UNDATED (AP) β The San Antonio Spurs have opened their NBA title defense with a one-point win over a state rival.
Tony Parker drained a go-ahead, 3-pointer with 1:07 remaining to give the Spurs a 101-100 triumph over Dallas. San Antonio trailed by eight at halftime before outscoring the Mavericks 31-20 in the third period.
Parker shot 4-for-4 from 3-point range and finished with a team-high 23 points. Tim Duncan chipped in 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Manu Ginobili (MAN’-oo jih-NOH’-blee) added 20 points to the victory.
Chandler Parsons missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds to play.
Mavericks guard Monta (MAHN’-tay) Ellis led all scorers with 26 points.

β James Harden scored 15 of his game-high 32 points from the line as Houston ripped the Los Angeles Lakers 108-90. Terrence Jones added 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Rockets, who led by 27 midway through the final period. Lakers rookie forward Julius Randle left his NBA debut on a stretcher after injuring his right leg in the fourth quarter. TNT reported Randle has a broken leg.
β Anthony Davis just missed a triple-double in New Orleans’ 101-84 win over Orlando, finishing with 26 points, 17 rebounds and nine blocks. Ryan Anderson finished with 22 points and Omir Asik (oh-MEER’ A’-sihk) added 14 points, 17 boards and five blocks.

Pens hammer Devils
UNDATED (AP) β The Pittsburgh Penguins trailed 3-1 in the second period on Tuesday before dialing up their offense.
Sidney Crosby scored twice while the Pens notched seven unanswered goals to beat the New Jersey Devils 8-3. Pascal Dupuis (doo-PWEE’), Blake Comeau (KOH’-moh), Steve Downie and Patric Honrqvist each finished with a goal and an assist, while Brandon Sutter and Simon Despres (see-MOHN’ duh-PRAY’) set up two goals apiece.
The eight goals is an NHL season high.

β Anaheim blanked Chicago 1-0 as John Gibson stopped 38 shots for his second shutout in six NHL games. The game was scoreless until Devante Smith-Pelly notched a short-handed goal midway through the third period, sending the Ducks to the eighth victory in their last nine games.
β Montreal tops the Eastern Conference at 8-2-0 after Carey Price turned back 37 shots in Montreal’s 2-1 triumph against Calgary. Price also stopped the Flames’ three shootout attempts, while P.A. Parenteau (PAR’-ehn-toh) provided the lone tally in the extra session.
β Vladimir Tarasenko capped his first career hat trick by scoring a power-play goal 88 seconds into overtime to wrap up the Blues’ 4-3 win at Dallas. Tarasenko had a pair of game-tying goals, the last coming with 8:23 remaining in regulation.
β Philadelphia pulled out a 3-2 win over Los Angeles on Brayden Schenn’s unassisted goal at 2:36 of overtime. Jakub Voracek (YAH’-kuhb VOHR’-ah-chehk) set up first-period goals by Michael Raffl and Chris VandeVelde in the Flyers’ third straight win.
β Winnipeg blew a 3-1 lead before Andrew Ladd scored early in the third period to lift the Jets past the Islanders 4-3 in New York. Ladd had two goals and Bryan Little had three assists as the Jets won for the third time in four games since a 1-4 start.
β Third-period goals by Erik Karlsson, Alex Chiasson (CHAY’-sahn) and Clarke MacArthur lifted Ottawa past Columbus 5-2. MacArthur had two goals and an assist to back Robin Lehner (LEH’-nur), who stopped 26 shots in the Senators’ first victory in three games.
β Nikita Kucherov notched his first career hat trick by scoring the first goal in each period of Tampa Bay’s 7-3 rout of Arizona. Brian Boyle tallied twice for the Lightning.
β Toronto was a 4-0 winner against Buffalo as Jonathan Bernier needed to make just 10 saves for his eighth shutout. The Sabres have been shut out four times in their last six games and have scored more than two goals just once through their first 10 games.
β Minnesota trailed 3-1 before Zach Price, Justin Fontaine and Marco Scandella scored less than 10 minutes apart in the third period of the Wild’s 4-3 comeback at Boston. The Bruins wasted two goals and one assist from rookie Seth Griffith.
β Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski scored the shootout goals as San Jose downed Colorado 3-2. Logan Couture tied the game early in the third period before the Sharks completed their second straight win since a four-game skid.
β Carolina’s season-opening winless skid has reached eight games with a 3-1 loss at Vancouver. Brad Richardson scored his first two goals of the season to support Ryan Miller’s 29 saves.

Hockey legend suffers stroke
DETROIT (AP) β Hockey Hall of Famer Gordie Howe has lost some function on the right side of his body after having a stroke Sunday in Texas.
Howe’s daughter Cathy says the 86-year-old Detroit Red Wings legend has lost much of the use of his right arm and right leg. Howe suffered the stroke in Lubbock, Texas, where his daughter lives.
Howe’s daughter said Tuesday night his speech is slurred, but he’s been looking at family pictures and pictures from his playing days, and he’s able to recognize and identify people he played with.
Howe spent 25 seasons with the Red Wings from 1946-71, winning four Stanley Cups, six Hart trophies and six Art Ross trophies. He later spent six seasons with the WHA’s Houston Aeros and New England Whalers before finishing his career back in the NHL with the Whalers in 1980.
Howe retired as the NHL’s all-time leader with 801 goals, 1,049 assists and 1,850 points.

Goalie out 1-2 weeks with broken finger
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) β The Columbus Blue Jackets will be without goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky for one or two weeks with a broken finger.
Bobrovsky suffered a fractured finger when he was struck by a puck in practice on Monday. He is 4-4-0 with a 2.81 goals-against average and .908 save percentage in eight games this season.
The club placed the 2013 Vezina Trophy winner as the NHL’s best goalie on injured reserve and added goaltender Anton Forsberg on emergency recall from its American Hockey League affiliate in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The 21-year-old Forsberg, Columbus’ sixth pick and the 188th overall in the 2011 draft, did not play in two games as Bobrovsky’s backup earlier this season. The Swede is 1-2-0 with a 2.36 goals-against average and .921 save percentage at Springfield.

β The Carolina Hurricanes have activated captain Eric Staal from injured reserve. Staal suffered an unspecified upper-body injury during the Hurricanes’ second game of the season on Oct. 11. He has missed the last five contests.

Bucs send former No. 1 pick to Rams…Champ Bailey retires after 15 seasons
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) β The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have traded safety Mark Barron to the St. Louis Rams and reserve linebacker Jonathan Casillas to the New England Patriots in exchange for draft picks.
Barron was the seventh overall selection in the 2012 draft. But he has not made the type of impact on defense that the 1-6 Bucs anticipated when he entered the league. The Rams gave up fourth and sixth-round picks in 2015 for the third-year safety, who has three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and one sack in 37 games.

β Champ Bailey has decided to retire after a 15-year NFL career that included 12 Pro Bowl berths, a record for a cornerback. Bailey’s agent, Jack Reale, said Bailey had opportunities to play this season but decided to pursue other opportunities. Bailey spent five seasons in Washington and 10 in Denver.
β Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell did not disclose a timetable for Nick Fairley’s return after the defensive tackle injured his right knee in a win over Atlanta on Sunday. Caldwell says he’s aware of a report that Fairley could miss around a month, but says the Lions haven’t come to that conclusion.
β The Buffalo Bills have placed backup safety Kenny Ladler on season-ending injured reserve because of an arm injury.
NFL-MISSING FAN
Broncos fan found safe
DENVER (AP) β A Denver Broncos fan who disappeared during last week’s game has been found safe.
Denver Police Sgt. Steve Warneke said Paul Kitterman was found Tuesday night in Pueblo, about 100 miles south of Denver. Warneke did not have any information about Kitterman’s disappearance, but he said no criminal charges are expected.
Family and friends of Kitterman had been searching for him since Thursday night’s game against the San Diego Chargers at Sports Authority Field.

Judge sets date for betting decision
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) β A judge has set a court date for New Jersey and the major U.S. professional sports leagues and the NCAA to argue whether a temporary ban on legalized sports betting in the state should be extended.
The parties will convene Nov. 20 in Trenton in front of U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp, whose restraining order stopping New Jersey from allowing legal sports betting. The NFL, the NBA, the NHL, Major League Baseball and the NCAA are seeking a preliminary injunction to extend the ban while the case proceeds.
