CHARLOTTE, NC — City and business leaders broke ground on a new waste-to-energy facility in North Charlotte.

Bluesphere is building a plant on Johnson Road off North Graham Street. Β The company will convert food and vegetable waste into electricity that it will sell to Duke Energy. Β It will also produce fertilizer and compost.

“So we’re saving room on the landfill, we kill this problem and also we’re generating electricity from a very bad thing,” said Shlomi Palas of Bluesphere.

The plant will run 24 hours a day. Β It will be fully automated, so there will only be about five employees.
