CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy is scheduled to face charges of assaulting and threatening his ex-girlfriend, less than two weeks before the start of training camp.
The district attorney has announced Hardy’s bench trial will begin on July 15th. He is facing two misdemeanor charges in reference to an incident that took place at his home with his ex-girlfriend.
He could face up to 60 days in jail if convicted of the domestic violence charge.
His ex-girlfriend, Nicole Holder, accused Hardy of throwing her to the floor and into a bathtub, strangling her, slamming her into a futon that was covered with guns, and threatening to shoot her if she told anyone about the fight.
She claimed Hardy was angry about her brief relationship with the rapper Nelly after they broke up.
Chris Falko, Hardy’s attorney, told a judge it was Holder who attacked Hardy.
Holder’s initial lawyer is no longer representing her after she failed to appear for a hearing in reference to a request for a protective order against Hardy.
Hardy had to turn over several guns shortly after his arrest. The weapons included semi-automatic rifles and shotguns.
The Panthers and the NFL are waiting until the legal process is over before they decide on punishment for the defensive end.
