Rice tops Houston 3-2 in 20, tourney’s 4th-longest game

HOUSTON (AP) — Leon Byrd hit an RBI double down the right-field line, giving Rice a 3-2 victory over Houston in 20 innings early Monday, the fourth-longest game in NCAA Tournament history.

Rice (37-21) advanced to play Louisiana-Lafayette in the regional championship on Monday after winning the game which lasted 6 hours, 2 minutes.

Ryan Chandler singled with one out off Aaron Garza (1-4) to set up Byrd’s double. Tristan Gray followed with a single, but Byrd was thrown out at the plate. Kirby Taylor fouled out to end the inning.

Kyle Survance singled off Austin Orewiler (6-2) to lead off the bottom of the ninth, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. Josh Vidales and Chris Iriart each flew out, and the jubilant Owls mobbed each other in celebration on the field.

Houston (43-20), which tied it in the eighth to send it to extra innings, was eliminated.
