MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — So-called “Billionaires’ Beach” in Malibu is now your beach, too.

The California Coastal Commission officially opened a public path to Carbon Beach on Tuesday, allowing the not-so-rich-and-famous access to the sandy backyards of oceanside mansions.

State law guarantees public access to California shorelines. Carbon Beach residents Lisette and Norman Ackerberg were required to provide a public path beside their house during its construction in the 1980s. Instead, they blocked access, and after her husband’s death, Lisette Ackerberg sued the Coastal Commission.

The commission won the suit in 2012.

The new pathway is the third to the 1 1/2-mile beach. The commission plans to open at least 18 additional paths throughout Malibu.
