ATLANTA (AP) — Julio Jones had nine receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns as the Falcons held off the Eagles 26-24 last night. Falcons’ quarterback Matt Ryan shook off a pair of interceptions to throw for 298 yards on 23 of 34 passing.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The 49ers opened their season with a 20-3 win over visiting Minnesota last night. Carlos Hyde had a big game with 168 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick (KAH’-lihn KAP’-ur-nihk) threw for 165 yards and improved to 5-0 in Monday night games.

UNDATED (AP) — The once large lead by St. Louis in the National League Central over Pittsburgh is now just 2 ½ games. This afternoon the Pirates are home to the Cubs in the first of a day-night doubleheader while the Cards this evening are at Milwaukee. The Cubs by the way are just 6 ½ back of the Cards.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The second of four games this week between the Astros and Rangers in Arlington, Texas, is on tap this evening. The Rangers won last night’s opening game 5-3 to reduce the Astros lead over Texas in the American League West to just a half-game.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Hall of Fame basketball player Moses Malone died of natural causes. The Virginia medical examiner’s office says Malone, who was found dead in a Norfolk hotel Sunday morning, died from heart disease. He was 60.
