COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina will not have outfielder Gene Cone, pitcher Taylor Widener or catcher Chris Cullen for fall baseball practice after each needed surgery. The school said Tuesday that Cone had an operation to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Saint Augustine’s has placed football coach Michael Morand on administrative leave without pay for two weeks. Officials at the Division II school announced the move yesterday but didn’t disclose the reason for it. They also say further action may be taken after an internal investigation is completed.

HOUSTON (AP) — A person with direct knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that Ryan Mallett will start at quarterback for the Houston Texans on Sunday at Carolina. Brian Hoyer started the season-opener, but had two turnovers early and was benched in the fourth quarter. Mallett took over and led the Texans on two scoring drives.

ATLANTA (AP) — David Price allowed one run in seven innings, Russell Martin hit a homer and drove in four runs, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Shelby Miller and the Atlanta Braves 9-1 last night to protect their lead in the AL East. Price gave up six hits and had nine strikeouts.
