COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina law enforcement is leaving little doubt they are still against medical marijuana.
The state’s top lawman and prosecutor, joined by a number of sheriffs and police chiefs and a few doctors at a news conference Wednesday, said they will fight a medical marijuana bill called the Compassionate Care Act .
The issue has gained traction in conservative South Carolina. But state Attorney General Alan Wilson says the bill allowing doctors to prescribe 2 ounces (57 grams) of marijuana every two weeks makes it too easy for prescribed marijuana to get into the wrong hands.
State Sen. Tom Davis said opponents haven’t read his legislation. The Beaufort Republican says it would be the most restrictive bill in the country, making it a felony to convert medical marijuana to personal use.
