Charlotte Sorority Chapter Donates $10,000 To Children’s Defense Fund

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, has donated $10,000 to the Children’s Defense Fund in order to purchase 750 books for children in need.

The book donations are part of a national partnership between Delta Sigma Theta and the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) called Chapters Beyond Books, with the goal of strengthening and enriching the lives of children.

The sorority’s mission “Striving for Excellence in Service, Scholarship, and Sisterhood,” is supported by this donation of 750 books to ten different area organizations.

Through the CDF Chapters Beyond Books partnership, Delta sorority has joined with members of the Divine 9 and other organizations to help reduce the risks of COVID-19 learning loss by supplying children with books, resources, and access to CDF Freedom Schools.

CDF officials say the goal is to help distribute 50,000 books across the country to families, helping build there in-home libraries, while nurturing a child’s love for reading.

Officials say to reach this goal, Delta Chapters were asked to donate a minimum of $1,000 to buy grade level books for children and youth.

The Charlotte Alumnae Chapter surpassed this goal by donating $10,000 towards buying books, that will be delivered to the following local organizations:

  • First Ward Elementary.
  • Statesville Road Elementary.
  • Oaklawn Elementary.
  • Irwin Avenue Elementary.
  • University Park Elementary.
  • Fran’s Kids Daycare Center.
  • Barringer Elementary.
  • Freedom School.
  • Care Ring.
  • Willow Oaks Academy.

β€œFor more than 75 years, Delta members have been engaged in the community,” says Melody Harris, CAC President.
β€œWhen chapter members pull together – regardless of uncertain times – share our strength and stay connected, we fight for others,
via community blood drives, collections for schools, homeless shelters, donating to nonprofits and other chapter events,” she
says.

The Charlotte Alumnae Chapter will also hold a free webinar titled, “Wills & Estate Planning II,” on Thursday, May 20th at 6:30 p.m.

Officials say the event will teach attendees how to understand life insurance and how it can serve as supplement income for retirement, investing, and more.
