E. coli found in Kannapolis water; boil water advisory still in effect

UPDATE (4/25, 10 a.m.)

The boil water advisory remains in effect in Kannapolis as of 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

Officials say they have flushed the city’s water lines and are analyzing samples to ensure all contaminants are eliminated.

There are a few areas of the city where the water comes from the City of Concord. These areas have safe water, and you may use your water without boiling it effective immediately. To learn if you’re in those areas, click HERE.

The city will provide an update when the advisory is lifted but said there’s no timeline for when that will happen. In the meantime, citizens can receive free bottled water at 1401 Bethpage Road.

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – A boil water notice has been issued in Kannapolis after contaminants that carry E. coli bacteria were found in the city’s drinking water, officials said Friday.

Officials said they are in the process of flushing and treating all water to eliminate contaminants. The city recommends citizens boil all water used for consumption or use bottled water until further notice.

Kannapolis City Schools dismissed early Friday due to the boil water advisory. Water at the schools were shut off out of an abundance of caution.

The bacteria can cause serious short-term effects, including diarrhea, cramps, nausea, and headaches. It can create greater health risks for infants, children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Officials said they believe it is a temporary issue and the advisory should be lifted within 24 hours. In the meantime, residents can receive bottled water today at the Kannapolis Fire Department Logistics Building off Floyd Street.
