NC Lawmaker wants to classify abortions as first-degree murder

RALEIGH, N.C. – A North Carolina representative wants to classify abortions as murder. House Bill 1232 or Life At Fertilization would rewrite the state law to include a fetus as human life and allow someone to use deadly force to stop an abortion.

How can you profess to be pro-life if you’re also advocating for the death penalty, especially in this case,” Rep. Laura Budd from Mecklenburg County said.

Representative Keith Kidwell is the primary sponsor. He’s known for controversial proposals like permit-less gun carry. Representative Ben Moss was a sponsor but removed his name after public pressure. In a letter, the Rep. from Moore County said, “portions of the bill’s current language have led to significant misunderstandings and different misinterpretations that distract from the core pro-life message and intent.”

β€œWhether you define yourself as pro-life or pro-choice, there is a line, and this bill steps across that line, and the public pressure on him from all corners to remove his name from it was successful, and we need more of that kind of advocacy,” Representative Budd said.

North Carolina already restricts pregnancy after 12 weeks and 6 days, some representatives say lawmakers should be more focused on improving quality of life and outcomes for families.

β€œIt’s not just about pregnancy and the woman, and then a birth of a baby, it is about the woman’s overall health, including her mental health. It’s about who pays her bills, what kind of childcare she has. Does she live in a safe home?,” Representative Budd asked.

Representative Budd says on top of harming women, legislation like this could influence people to stay away from the Tarheel state,

β€œIt is nothing short of a brain drain. How much talent are we losing? Because women don’t want to move back here, and while I say it’s women, it’s also men,” Rep. Budd said. β€œThe reality is we haven’t done our job as electeds until we address all these issues, such that this type of bill doesn’t get filed anymore, because we’ve learned to respect the rights of others”

The Life at Fertilization bill has been referred to the rules committee. There’s no timeline on when or if it will be brought to the floor for a vote.
