Charlotte City Councilman: “We must do something” about noise complaints in Uptown

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte City Council continues to consider ways to address noise complaints in Center City. Last month, residents and business owners told WCCB Charlotte that drivers with illegal mufflers in Uptown are making the city sound like a war-zone.

On Monday, City Council’s Safety Committee agreed to look into ways to more-aggressively enforce existing noise ordinances. City attorneys say noise cameras are not currently allowed under state law. But committee members agreed noise is an issue that needs to be addressed, especially for people living in Uptown and for hotel guests. City Councilman Malcolm Graham says, “Guests who are complaining at night about loud noise 1, 2, 3:00 in the morning, so it’s not a question of if we have to do something, we must do something.”

Residents say if noise cameras could get approval, they could be linked to the red light camera system that Charlotte leaders are already considering.
