Buying breast milk online is a growing trend for mothers who can’t produce their own. A new study finds large amounts of bacteria, and even fecal contamination in some of the milk purchased or donated online. Researchers blame dirty containers and poor shipping methods. Experts warn giving infants online breast milk can cause serious health problems.

Laura Corsig, from The Nursing Mothers Place said, “The longer milk sits out and the way that it was procured and the age of that milk has an effect.  When that milk is procured over the Internet there’s no regulation to it.”

Corsig recommends using a non-profit milk bank. The donors are screened and the  milk is pasteurized and tested. The closest one to the Charlotte area is in Raleigh.
