Police Say Speed Was Factor In Fatal West Charlotte Crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officers say excessive speed was a factor in a crash that killed a man Sunday afternoon in west Charlotte.  The accident happened just before 1pm on Old Steele Creek Road near Primrose Avenue.

Officers say 71-year-old Curtis Petty was driving a 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan when he run off the road to the right, striking a utility pole and several trees.  Petty died from the injuries he sustained in the accident, according to a news release.

Police say the initial investigation revealed Petty was traveling southwest on Old Steele Creek Road at a high rate of speed.  Investigators say the vehicle was traveling too fast to negotiate a curve in the road.  The vehicle reportedly ran off the road to the right onto the grass shoulder, sideswiped a utility pole and then struck several trees before coming to a rest.

Police say Petty was not wearing a seat belt.  The investigation is ongoing and anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Detective Oberer at 704-432-2169, extension 3.
