CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β€” Just eight days after being involved in a vehicular accident, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was back at practice today. He took part in all of the team drills and did some throwing. Newton suffered two fractures in his lower back from flipping his truck in the two-vehicle accident. His status for this week’s game with Cleveland is uncertain.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) β€” As expected, former Nebraska coach Bo Pelini has been named the head football coach at Youngstown State. He’s familiar with the territory as the 47-year-old grew up, played and coached high school football in the Youngstown area. Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel is now the president of Youngstown State.

UNDATED (AP) β€” Oliver Luck is leaving his job as athletic director at West Virginia to join the NCAA as executive vice president of regulatory affairs. He will oversee day-to-day operations in all NCAA regulatory functions. Luck’s son, Andrew, is the quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts and the NCAA offices are based in Indianapolis.

UNDATED (AP) β€” Nearly 500 employees at NFL headquarters in New York have turned over phone and email records to investigators looking into how Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL’) and his staff pursued and handled evidence in the Ray Rice case. Two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press about the handover of material on condition of anonymity because details of the investigation won’t be made public until the report is released.

LOS ANGELES (AP) β€” The Dodgers and pitcher Brandon McCarthy have finalized a four-year, $48 million contract. L.A. has also designated reliever Brian Wilson for assignment to make room for McCarthy. The right-hander has played for five teams in his first nine years in the big leagues.
