CHARLOTTE, NC — The grandmother of the teenager who opened fire at suspected intruders spoke on camera only to WCCB Charlotte’s Courtney Francisco about that deadly night.
Protecting her grand kids has always been Anna Marie Wyant’s job.
Until Tuesday, when her 14-year-old grandson grabbed a gun to protect her.
“He was my hero,” said Wyant.
Police say Isai Delcid was breaking into a window. The boy says he warned the man, but the man kept coming. He told 911 he fired three shots. Isai died. Investigators say Isai’s brother, Carlos Delcid, ran from the scene.
The grandmother decided to speak exclusively with WCCB Charlotte after the Delcid family pleaded with a Mecklenburg County judge Thursday. They wanted the living brother, Carlos, out of jail.
“If I was home alone, who knows what they would have done to me?” said Wyant.
Deputies surrounded Delcid’s father, mother and sister at the courthouse Thursday. The family was silent.
Inside the courthouse, a Delcid family friend told the judge, if Carlos could go to his brother’s funeral, maybe he’d understand what he has done by including Isai in the Tuesday break-in.
“He was coming through window,” Wyant told 911 dispatchers that night.
Carlos, police say, ran. He left his wounded brother on the home’s porch.
“He’s out there bleeding for God’s sake,” Wyant told dispatchers.
Police caught Carlos the next day. They tracked his ankle monitor.
He wore that because this is the third time police have arrested the 22-year-old for breaking into Wyant’s home and stealing medication.
The judge refused to change his bond.
WCCB Charlotte stopped by the Delcid home after the court appearance.
Two police officers were outside. They wouldn’t say why they were there. Reporters later learned no one inside the home made any calls for help or service.
The Delcid’s didn’t answer the door, but a day earlier, they were clear. They feel something isn’t right about what happened.
“I’ll say there’s something not covered,” said the family member. “There’s something, but we’ll figure it out.”
Back at Wyant’s, Anna Marie is back to guarding her grandson. She asked WCCB Charlotte to continue to conceal his name.
She says he has seen a doctor and will seek counseling.
“My grandson saved my life,” said Wyant.
Carlos will be in court for 1st Degree Burglary January 8.
His Probable Cause Hearing for Misdemeanor Larceny is set for March 10.
