Lakers thump Warriors…Cavs clobber Wolves in Love’s first game against old team

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Los Angeles Lakers didn’t need Kobe Bryant to pull out a victory against the NBA’s No. 1 team.

Bryant was given the night off while Ronnie Price provided 17 points and eight assists in the Lakers’ 115-105 triumph over the Golden State Warriors. Carlos Boozer had a team-high 18 points on 8 of 11 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds to help Los Angeles improve to 9-19. Nick Young was among seven Lakers to score in double figures, finishing with 15.

The Warriors trailed by 15 at halftime and carried a 95-73 deficit into the fourth quarter before falling to 23-4. Stephen (STEH’-fehn) Curry had a game-high 22 points on 10 of 14 from the field for Golden State.

It was the Warriors’ second loss in four games since a team-record 16-game winning streak.

In other NBA action:

β€” Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving and LeBron James combined for 73 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers won for the 12th time in 15 games, knocking off Minnesota 125-104. Love scored 20 points in his first game against the Timberwolves since they dealt him to Cleveland last summer. Irving finished with a game-high 29 points and James chipped in 24.

β€” DeMarre Carroll scored a career-high 25 points and Atlanta stormed back from a 13-point deficit to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 107-104. Al Horford delivered 20 points for the Hawks, winners of five straight and 14 of 15.

β€” Derrick Rose dropped in 25 points and Pau Gasol (pow gah-SAHL’) had 18 as the Chicago Bulls beat Washington 99-91 to run their winning streak to four games. Rose scored six points during an 8-0 run that put the Bulls up by seven with 1:48 remaining.

β€” Damian Lillard lit up the Thunder for 40 points and Portland rallied from a 13-point, fourth-quarter deficit to win at Oklahoma City, 115-111 in overtime. Lillard went 8 of 12 from 3-point range, including a game-tying trey with three seconds left in regulation.

β€” Phoenix rolled to its fourth straight win as Eric Bledsoe posted a triple-double of 16 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in a 124-115 victory over Dallas. Goran Dragic (DRAH’-gihch) scored 25 and Gerald Green 22 in the Suns’ highest-scoring game of the season.

β€” Joe Johnson scored 27 points as Brooklyn downed Denver 102-96, giving the Nets an 11-2 mark against teams with losing records. Mason Plumlee added 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to the Nets’ second consecutive win.

β€” Philadelphia rallied from a 23-point, second-half deficit to beat the Heat 91-87 in Miami. Michael Carter-Williams finished with 20 points and Luc Mbah a Moute (look EHM’-bah ah MOO’-tay) added 19 to help the 76ers post their first winning streak of the season.

β€” George Hill had a team-high 15 points over 21 minutes in his season debut to lead Indiana past New Orleans 96-84. Hill missed the Pacers’ first 28 games with a left knee contusion.

β€” Charlotte owns a season-high, four-game winning streak after Kemba Walker scored 27 points and Gerald Henderson added 16 in a 108-101 decision over Milwaukee. The Hornets have won their last seven meetings against the Bucks.

β€” Tobias Harris scored 19 points and Orlando ended a four-game losing streak by downing Boston 100-95. Nik Vucevic (voo-SEH’-vihch) and Kyle O’Quinn each added 18 points for the Magic, who carried a 22-point lead into the fourth quarter before holding on.

T25 MEN’S BASKETBALL-SCHEDULE

Wildcats hustled in Vegas…Cardinals rule

UNDATED (AP) β€” Third-ranked Arizona has absorbed its first loss of the men’s basketball season.

Christian Wood had 24 points and 10 rebounds as UNLV topped the Wildcats 71-67. Rashad Vaughn added 21 points to help the Runnin’ Rebels end the Wildcats’ regular-season nonconference winning streak at 39 games. Patrick McCaw capped his 13-point night by draining two free throws to ice the victory.

Arizona is 12-1.

β€” Wayne Blackshear hit his first seven shots en route to a career-high 31 points as fourth-ranked Louisville pounded Cal State Northridge 80-55. Blackshear made four 3-pointers while scoring 16 of Louisville’s first 21 points. He helped the 11-0 Cardinals win easily without junior forward Montrezl (mahn-TREHL’) Harrell, who served a one-game suspension for a flagrant foul in Louisville’s win over Western Kentucky.

β€” Dylan Ennis scored 17 points and Ryan Arcidiacono (ahr-chee-dee-AH’-koh-noh) matched a season high with 16 to send seventh-ranked Villanova past NJIT 92-67. The Wildcats shot 54 percent and improved to 12-0.

β€” Stanford pulled off an upset as Anthony Brown scored a season-high 25 points and Chasson Randle added 21 to lead the Cardinals past ninth-ranked Texas 74-71 in overtime. Brown hit a driving basket with 68 seconds left to put Stanford ahead to stay.

β€” No. 11 Wichita State pulled out an 80-79 overtime win against Hawaii on Rashard Kelly’s put-back with 3.8 seconds left. Ron Baker scored a team-high 17 points and Kelly added 12 on 5 of 6 shooting to help the Shockers reach the Diamond Head Classic title game.

β€” No. 14 Utah was an 80-66 winner against South Dakota St. behind freshman Brekkot Chapman’s season-high 22 points. Delon Wright added 17 points, 10 assists and six rebounds for the Utes.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-BOWL GAMES

Cato leads Marshall to bowl win…Late field goal lifts Navy

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) β€” Rakeem Cato has capped his record-setting career by leading Marshall to a 52-23 win over North Illinois in the inaugural Boca Raton Bowl.

Cato threw for three touchdowns to extend his single-season school record to 40. He also extended his streak of throwing at least one touchdown pass to 46 consecutive games, tying the NCAA all-division mark.

Tuesday’s other bowl game had Navy beating San Diego State 17-16 in the Poinsettia Bowl on Austin Grebe’s 24-yard field goal with 1:27 remaining. Quarterback Keenan Reynolds accounted for just 26 total yards, but he also scored Navy’s two touchdowns on short runs.

Aztecs kicker Donny Hageman was wide right on a 34-yard field goal attempt with 20 seconds left.

Mariota takes AP top player honors

UNDATED (AP) β€” Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tuh) is The Associated Press college football player of the year in a landslide vote reminiscent of his Heisman Trophy win.

Mariota received 49 of the 54 votes submitted by the AP Top 25 media panel. Alabama receiver Amari Cooper drew three votes.

Mariota is the first Oregon player to win AP player of the year, which was first awarded in 1998, and the eighth quarterback to win it in the last nine years.

He led the Ducks to the Pac-12 title and has them in the hunt for their first national championship.

Mariota set a Pac-12 record by accounting for 53 touchdowns, including 38 TD passes. The junior is the highest rated passer in the country (186.33) and has thrown for 3,783 yards and just two interceptions.

Fisher gets extension through ’22

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) β€” Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher has been rewarded with a contract extension to keep him with the program through the 2022 season. The school announced the deal Tuesday, less than a year after Fisher’s last contract extension.

The No. 3 Seminoles are 58-10 since Fisher replaced Bobby Bowden before the 2010 season. Florida State won the national championship last year and quarterback Jameis (JAYM’-his) Winston became the third Heisman winner in school history. The team is in the midst of a school record 29-game win streak.

Details of the contract were not immediately available. His current deal pays about $4.1 million per season.

Virginia Tech coach cleared for bowl

WASHINGTON (AP) β€” Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer has been cleared by his doctors to work the Military Bowl on Saturday against Cincinnati. The 68-year-old Beamer is still recovering from throat surgery shortly after the end of the regular season.

Beamer says the doctors don’t want him to be exposed to “a lot of people right now because of the risks of viruses and infection.”

Beamer’s appearance at practice has been sporadic over the past few weeks.

Habs, Lightning tighten East leaderboard

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning continue to share the NHL’s Atlantic Division lead after beating the top two teams in the Metropolitan Division.

Tyler Johnson recorded his second career hat trick while the Lightning built a 4-0 lead in a 4-3 victory against Pittsburgh. Nikita Kucherov (koo-CHEHR’-ahf) added a goal and two assists to help Tampa Bay send the Penguins to just their seventh regulation loss of the season.

Andrej Palat (AHN’-dray pah-LAHT’) set up three goals in the Lightning’s second victory in six games.

Carey Price stopped 37 shots and the Canadiens scored the last three goals in a 3-1 triumph over the New York Islanders. The Isles led 1-0 until Andrei Markov and Brendan Gallagher scored five minutes apart in the second period.

The Canadiens won for the fifth time in six games and ended the Islanders’ four-game winning streak.

β€” The New York Rangers picked up their seventh consecutive win as Henrik Lundqvist stopped 30 shots in a 4-2 victory over Washington. Rick Nash and Martin St. Louis (mahr-TAN san loo-EE’) had two goals apiece to help the Blueshirts send the Capitals to their first regulation loss in 10 games.

β€” Toronto blanked Dallas 4-0 as Jonathan Bernier (BURN’-yay) handled 43 shots in his second shutout of the season. James van Riemsdyk (REEMZ’-dyk) collected a goal and two assists to help the Maple Leafs halt a three-game skid.

β€” Detroit’s six-game losing streak is over after Tomas Tatar (tah-TAHR’) scored two power-play goals and Gustav Nyquist collected three assists in the Red Wings’ 6-3 triumph over Buffalo. The Wings scored three power-play goals in the final 8:20 after trailing 3-1 late in the second period.

β€” Michael Hutchinson turned away 38 shots and Mathieu Perreault (peh-ROH’) scored twice as Winnipeg dumped Chicago 5-1. The Blackhawks allowed a season high for goals in losing for just the fourth time in their last 18 games.

β€” Loui (LOO’-ee) Eriksson and Brad Marchand each scored twice, while Patrice Bergeron (pah-TREES’ BEHR’-zhur-ahn) collected three assists in Boston’s 5-3 win over Nashville. The Bruins have won three of four since a 1-4-2 skid.

β€” Philadelphia coughed up a 2-0 lead before Wayne Simmonds scored late in the second period of the Flyers’ 5-2 verdict over Minnesota. Sean Couturier (koo-TOOR’-ee-ay) and Claude Giroux (juh-ROO’) scored 2:17 apart in the first period before the Flyers completed their third straight victory, which puts them back at .500.

β€” Carolina won for only the second time in their last 10 games, thanks to Chris Terry’s shootout goal in a 2-1 triumph over New Jersey. The Hurricanes trailed 1-0 until Ron Hainsey tallied with 8:01 left in the third period.

β€” Jarome Iginla (ih-GIHN’-luh), Ryan O’Reilly and Alex Tanguay (TAN’-gay) each had a goal and two assists in Colorado’s third straight win, 5-0 against St. Louis. Blues netminder Jake Allen was pulled after allowing five goals on 31 shots through 38 minutes.

β€” Edmonton lost for the 19th time in 20 games as couple of former Oilers led Arizona to a 5-1 victory over the NHL’s worst team. Sam Gagner (GAHN’-yay) scored twice and Devan Dubnyk (DOOB’-nihk) stopped 26 shots as the Coyotes picked up their second victory in nine games.

Manning leads 9 Broncos into Pro Bowl

NEW YORK (AP) β€” The AFC West champion Denver Broncos led the NFL with nine players selected for the Pro Bowl.

Quarterback Peyton Manning was picked for the 14th time. Joining Manning from the Broncos will be Ryan Clady, Chris Harris, Von Miller, Aqib Talib, Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas, T.J. Ward and DeMarcus Ware.

The NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys were second with six selections for the Jan. 25 game in Glendale, Arizona, site of the Super Bowl.

Tony Romo will be going for the fourth time. Dez Bryant, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin, DeMarco Murray and Tyron Smith were also honored.

NFL moves divisional title games…Rivers says he’s fine

UNDATED (AP) β€” The division-deciding games at Green Bay and Atlanta will be played late Sunday afternoon.

The NFL moved the Lions-Packers game for the NFC North to 4:25 p.m. EST. It also put the Panthers-Falcons game in that time slot, but switched networks for that showdown for the NFC South crown to CBS. Detroit-Green Bay will be on Fox.

β€” San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers practiced and says he’s not feeling the effects of back and rib injuries. The 9-6 Chargers need to win at Kansas City on Sunday to clinch a wild-card berth.

β€” The Cleveland Browns have signed veteran quarterback Tyler Thigpen to help them get through their season finale at Baltimore. With quarterbacks Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL’) and Brian Hoyer injured, the Browns will likely start rookie Connor Shaw against the Ravens with Thigpen backing him up.

MLB-DEAL

Peavy, Giants have new deal

UNDATED (AP) β€” Jake Peavy (PEE’-vee) and the San Francisco Giants have finalized a $24 million, two-year contract, that was agreed to last week

The 33-year old right-hander helped Boston win the 2013 World Series and was traded to San Francisco on July 26. After beginning 1-9 with Boston, Peavy went 6-4 with a 2.17 ERA in 12 starts for San Francisco.

β€” Reliever Jordan Walden and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a $6.6 million, two-year contract that avoided salary arbitration. The 27-year-old right-hander was acquired from Atlanta in in a trade last month.
