CHARLOTTE, NC — New problems for the Penguin Drive-In. The iconic Plaza Midwood resturant is facing eviction.
Court documents filed Wednesday show the landlord, Mission Central Venture One, says the owner of the Penguin hasn’t paid rent for several months, adding up to a total of more than $4,100 owed in back rent.
The restaurant closed about a week ago due to what we were told was a staffing issue. The owner, Lisa Ballentine, told WCCB the Penguin was scheduled to reopen Wednesday, but a sign on the door says it will open Thursday.
A customer tells WCCB she is hopeful the restaurant will return to its glory days. “It’s kind of sad to see that everybody used to hang out at that location, then it had to move into the other location,” said Plaza Midwood resident Christine Zelez. “Maybe we can make strides back into the old building.”
The Penguin filed for bankruptcy in November. It owed $140,000 in federal taxes.
