Β LIBERIA / ATLANTA, GA —Β A state of emergency has been declared in Liberia as the Ebola outbreak worsens. Β Soldiers in full combat gear are keeping patients, and the potentially infected, from traveling freely around west Africa.
Thursday, the CDC issued its highest alert for the Ebola crisis: a Level One. Β That means more people and more resources are being dedicated to the response.
A Charlotte missionary and her colleague from Samaritan’s Purse are in stable condition in Atlanta. Β Nancy Writebol and Dr. Kent Brantly are still receiving an experimental drug at Emory University Hospital. Β The same potentially life-saving treatment won’t be used in west Africa for months, if at all. Β Writebol’s husband says his heart goes out to all of those patients.
“We’re losing our humanity,” he said.Β Β “It’s not just the ones that are in rich countries that have elite statusΒ …that are valuable and deserve some kind of something.”
Ebola has killed 932 people and infected more than 1,700 in west Africa this year. Β A U.S. House subcommittee is looking into the international effort to combat the virus. Β The CDC director testified Thursday that it’s the most complex outbreak in history.
