CMPD: Man Charged With Murder In Northeast Charlotte Homicide Case

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has upgraded the charge in a fatal northeast Charlotte shooting case to murder.

Darrell McKinley, 53, has been charged with murder in the homicide case of 50-year-old Malik Whitney, according to police.

CMPD previously charged McKinley with voluntary manslaughter. A continued investigation by detectives into the incident, along with new evidence received, led to the upgrade charge of murder.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Detectives are investigating a homicide after finding a man shot to death on North Tryon Street late Saturday evening.

Officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon service call on North Tryon Street shortly after 11:23 p.m.

At the scene, officers located a man with an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead by hospital staff.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
