Huntersville Teen’s Murder Still Unsolved Nearly Eight Years Later

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – A local mom is still searching for answers nearly eight years after her son’s murder.

The death of 19-year-old Peter Jordan rattled neighbors in Huntersville.

At the time, the town hadn’t seen a homicide in two years.

“I try to come every other week,” says Carolyn Averill.

The pain of losing her son, Peter Jordan, still hurts as she visits his grave site in Cornelius.

“It’s kind of comforting coming here, but most times, it’s really heartbreaking for me,” Averill says.

Her son lost his life February 19, 2014, after being shot an apartment complex in Huntersville.

“We really don’t know what happened. All we know is that Peter was outside smoking a cigarette. And these guys came,” she says.

Witnesses describe a black Chevy Impala with three or four men inside, speeding away from the scene.

Since then, Carolyn and her husband Craig haven’t stopped searching for answers.

“What happened that night? I just don’t understand it.” Carolyn says.

“It’s frustrating, because we can’t get closure on that night and that would help,” says Craig.

Huntersville Police say they do not have any updates on the case, but they do believe someone knows what happened that night.

In the meantime, Carolyn treasures the memories of her son.

“He was very sociable. We call him the social butterfly, because everybody was his friend. He just loved people,” she says.

They are hoping that some day the person responsible for Peter’s murder will be brought to justice.

“The holidays are not the same. It’s a new paradigm and every holiday is difficult because he’s not sitting in that chair at the table,” Craig says.

There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in Peter Jordan’s murder.
