BELMONT, NC — Belmont police have arrested a 24-year-old Charlotte woman on charges of child abuse, shoplifting, and possession of a controlled substance.
Police responded to a welfare call at the Hawley Avenue Wal-Mart in Belmont around 6pm Wednesday. Employees say they witnessed Amanda Meeler pocketing items while leaving her 5-month-old baby boy in a cart unattended. They say Meeler appeared to be under the influence and became concerned for the crying child’s well being.
Police arrested Meeler and found multiple items hidden under her clothing. The little boy was soiled and showed signs of neglect. Officers contacted Gaston County Social Services, and an officer and a Wal-Mart employee took it upon themselves to clean and dress the child. Officials released the infant into the grandmother’s custody.
Belmont Police charged Amanda Meeler with concealing merchandise and child abuse. While at the jail Meeler was found to be in possession of a controlled substance and was then charged by the Gaston County Sheriff.
