Week 2 of NFL play

UNDATED (AP) β€” It was another costly victory for the Dallas Cowboys.

Tony Romo suffered a broken left collarbone in the third quarter of the Cowboys’ 20-10 triumph at Philadelphia. The injury occurred on a sack, leading Romo to suffer his second fractured collarbone in six seasons.

The Cowboys say Romo will be re-evaluated today and joins wide receiver Dez Bryant on the Dallas sideline.

Dallas overcame a franchise-record 18 penalties in their 10th consecutive road win. Kyle Wilber returned a blocked punt 26 yards for touchdown, and backup Brandon Weeden threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Williams.

Reigning NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray had just 2 yards rushing on 13 carries in his first game against his former team.

Elsewhere in the NFL:

β€” Green Bay won a rematch of last season’s NFC title game, although the Packers squandered a 13-3 halftime lead before downing Seattle 27-17. Aaron Rodgers’ second scoring pass of the night was a go-ahead, five-yard toss to Richard Rodgers with 9:28 remaining. Aaron Rodgers was 25 of 33 for 249 yards and no interceptions. Mason Crosby hit four field goals for the Pacers, who finished the game without Eddie Lacy after he injured his right ankle in the first quarter.

β€” Jameis (JAYM’-ihs) Winston passed for a touchdown and ran for another as Tampa Bay knocked off the Saints 26-19. Winston completed 14 of 21 passes for 207 yards and no interceptions in his second NFL start. The Saints turned the ball over twice on fumbles, one each by running back Mark Ingram and receiver Willie Snead, and once on Chris Conte’s interception of Drew Brees (breez).

β€” Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL’) and his Cleveland Browns came out on top of Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tah) and the Tennessee Titans 28-14. Manziel threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin on Cleveland’s second play and connected with his wide receiver again for a clutch 50-yarder with 2:52 left. Benjamin also returned a punt 78 yards for a TD in the first half as the Browns got just their third home-opening win since 1999.

β€” Cam Newton threw two touchdown passes and somersaulted into the end zone for another score to lead the Carolina Panthers to a 24-17 victory over the Houston Texans. Newton was 18 of 37 for 195 yards and ran for 77 yards on nine carries. Ryan Mallett started in place of Brian Hoyer and threw for 244 yards and a touchdown, while also running for a 6-yard score.

β€” Tom Brady threw for 466 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Patriots to a 40-32 win over the Bills. Brady improved to 24-3 against Buffalo, and his passing yards were the most ever by a Bills opponent. Julian Edelman scored two touchdowns, and the Patriots needed to stave off a fourth-quarter rally after building a 37-13 lead through three quarters.

β€” Atlanta is 2-0 after Devonta Freeman’s two-yard scoring run with 1:14 remaining pushed the Falcons past the 0-2 Giants, 24-20. Julio Jones had 13 receptions for 135 yards, including a 37-yard grab that set up the winning touchdown. The Giants blew a 20-10 fourth-quarter lead, one week after blowing a 10-point lead in the final eight minutes.

β€” Adrian Peterson had 192 total yards in Minnesota’s 26-16 victory over the Detroit Lions. Peterson rushed 29 times for 134 yards after receiving a pregame standing ovation out of the tunnel in his first home game in a year. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater threw for one touchdown and ran for another while finishing 14 of 18 for 153 yards and no turnovers.

β€” Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH’-lihs-bur-gur) had another big day for the Steelers, tossing for 369 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-18 win over San Francisco. The Steelers domination was so complete that they converted a pair of 2-point attempts in the first half to seize momentum in the game. Antonio Brown caught nine passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns for the Steelers, who rolled up 453 total yards despite having the ball for only 23 minutes

β€” Derek Carr enjoyed the best afternoon of his pro career while helping the Oakland Raiders drop the Baltimore Ravens to 0-2. The Raiders pulled out a 37-33 victory over the Ravens on Carr’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Seth Roberts with 26 seconds left. Carr went 7 for 9 for 65 yards on the winning drive and finished with a career-high 351 yards and three touchdowns for the 1-1 Raiders.

β€” Rookie Matt Jones ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns as the Redskins topped the Rams 24-10. The third-round pick out of Florida scored from 39 yards in the first quarter and from 3 with about 2 1/2 minutes left in the game. Quarterback Kirk Cousins went 23 for 27 for 207 yards and a 4-yard TD pass to Pierre Garcon (gahr-SOHN’).

β€” Carson Palmer had four touchdown tosses to lead the Arizona Cardinals to a 48-23 victory over the Chicago Bears. Palmer connected with Larry Fitzgerald for three TDs, and David Johnson returned the opening kickoff a club-record 108 yards and added a rushing TD. The loss was costly for Chicago as quarterback Jay Cutler left with an injured hamstring late in the first half.

β€” Jacksonville pulled out a 23-20 win over Miami on rookie Jason Myers’ 28-yard field goal with 40 seconds left. The Jaguars took the ball with 1:48 remaining before Blake Bortels put them in field-goal range with pass plays of 18, 19 and 9 yards. Bortles was 18 of 33 for 273 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions for the 1-1 Jags.

Races continue to heat up

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Texas Rangers have seen their lead in the American League West shrink to 1 Β½ games over Houston.

Felix Hernandez became the American League’s first 18-game winner and Robinson Cano (kuh-NOH’) had four RBIs as Seattle hammered the Rangers 9-2. Hernandez is 18-9 after giving up two runs and five walks in 5 2/3 innings. He left with stiffness in his right elbow, but the Mariners called the move precautionary.

Cano belted a three-run homer to back Hernandez, who is 5-0 with a 1.83 ERA against Texas this season.

The Astros picked up their second straight win as Colby Rasmus homered twice and had three RBIs in a 5-1 triumph against Oakland. George Springer added a two-run homer to support Collin McHugh, who is 17-7 after limiting the A’s to a run and four hits in eight innings.

β€” Kansas City ripped Detroit 10-3 as Kendrys Morales went 4-for-4 with three solo homers while setting a team record with 15 total bases. Christian Colon had a career-high four hits and Paulo Orlando homered as the Royals reduced their magic number for winning the AL Central to three over Minnesota.

β€” Rookie Tyler Duffey allowed three hits in seven shutout innings as the Twins ripped the Angels 8-1, leaving both teams 2 1/2 games behind the Astros for the final AL wild-card berth. Eddie Rosario and Joe Mauer hit two-run homers and Torii Hunter furnished a go-ahead, solo shot for Minnesota.

β€” The AL East-leading Blue Jays blew a 3-0 lead and lost 4-3 to Boston on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Rich Hill allowed three runs and struck out 10 over seven innings for his first big league win in 26 months. Dioner (dee-AH’-nur) Navarro smacked a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, whose division lead is down to 2 Β½ games over the New York Yankees.

β€” Dustin Ackley and Greg Bird launched three-run homers while the Yankees scored 11 times against the Mets’ bullpen in an 11-2 thrashing of the NL East leaders. The Yanks scored five runs in both the sixth and eighth innings after Mets starter Matt Harvey held them to one hit over five scoreless frames. The Mets’ magic number remains eight after they dropped the rubber match for the second straight series.

β€” Yunel (YOO’-nehl) Escobar had four hits and four RBIs as Washington clobbered Miami 13-3. Stephen Strasburg struck out 10 and allowed just one run over seven innings of the Nationals’ third straight win. The Nats are within six games of the Mets with 12 remaining.

β€” Cleveland remains four games out of a playoff berth after Josh Tomlin pitched 5 2-3 scoreless innings to lead the Indians past the White Sox, 6-3. Lonnie Chisenhall had a two-run homer and three RBIs as the Indians moved back to .500 at 74-74.

β€” Rookies Tommy Pham and Stephen Piscotty homered as St. Louis beat the Cubs 4-3, ending Chicago’s five-game winning streak. Carlos Martinez allowed two runs and pitched four-hit ball into the seventh as the NL Central-leading Cardinals maintained their four-game edge over Pittsburgh. The Cubs are six games behind the Redbirds, and their magic number to clinch a playoff berth remains five.

β€” Gerrit Cole picked up his 17th win and the Pirates rallied with two solo homers to beat the Dodgers, 4-3 in Los Angeles. Starling Marte (mahr-TAY’) and Pedro Alvarez went deep before Aramis (ah-RAH’-mihs) Ramirez added an RBI single that put the Bucs ahead 4-2 in the fifth. The Pirates improved to 23-6 versus the NL West and kept the Dodgers’ magic number for clinching the division at seven over San Francisco.

β€” Buster Posey crushed a three-run homer in the sixth after Tim Hudson tossed six shutout innings in the Giants’ 5-1 triumph over Arizona. Hudson scattered four hits and helped San Francisco trim the Dodgers’ division lead to seven games.

β€” Chris Davis hit his major league-leading 43rd home run, but Baltimore coughed up a 5-4 lead in the ninth and lost 6-5 at Tampa Bay. Pinch-hitter Brandon Guyer (GY’-ur) tied it with a leadoff homer in the ninth before Kevin Kiermaier (KEER’-my-ur) beat out a two-out single for the winning run.

β€” Atlanta beat Philadelphia 2-1 on A.J. Pierzynski’s (pper-ZIHN’-skeez) walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth. Braves starter Julio Teheran had a perfect game before giving up a single to Freddy Galvis leading off the seventh.

β€” Adam Lind drove in three runs and Milwaukee ended an eight-game losing streak by outscoring Cincinnati, 8-4. Jay Bruce homered twice for the Reds, who committed a pair of fifth-inning errors that led to five runs.

β€” Matt Kemp hit one of the Padres’ four home runs and also doubled twice in a 10-4 rout of Colorado. Yangervis Solarte (yahn-HEHR’-vihs soh-LAHR’-tay), Jedd Gyorko (JUR’-koh) and Cory Spangenberg (SPAN’-jehn-burg) also homered to back James Shields, who gave up four runs but just two hits over 6 2/3 innings to earn his 13th win.

MLB-BRAVES

Braves pitcher hospitalized

ATLANTA (AP) β€” Atlanta Braves right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (fohl-TIH’-neh-vihch) has been hospitalized because of blood clots in his right arm. The club says he was taken to an emergency room on Friday with swelling and redness in his arm. Foltynewicz is 4-6 with a 5.71 ERA in 15 starts and three relief appearances. His last game was on Aug. 25, and he was placed on the 15-day disabled list with ribs inflammation on Sept. 2.

Big-Ten tops the poll

UNDATED (AP) β€” Ohio State and Michigan State of the Big-Ten hold down the top two spots in the new Associated Press Top-25 poll.

The Buckeyes picked up 40 of 61 first-place votes after surviving a tough game against Northern Illinois. Michigan State got seven and third-ranked Mississippi 11.

Ole Miss actually shares the No. 3 spot with TCU, just ahead of Baylor. Notre Dame is sixth, followed by LSU, Georgia, UCLA and Florida State. LSU’s Tiger received one first-place vote.

NASCAR

Hamlin goes last to first at Chicagoland

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) β€” Denny Hamlin has earned a surprise automatic berth into the second round of NASCAR’s playoffs.

Hamlin rallied from last to victory lane at Chicagoland Speedway in the opening race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Hamlin is in coast mode for the next two races because his victory moves him into the second round. Only 12 drivers will advance into the next round, and a victory in any Chase race earns an automatic berth.

Carl Edwards rallied from a speeding penalty to finish second and give JGR and Toyota a 1-2 finish.

Third-place finisher Kurt Busch was headed for the win until the final caution was called with 10 laps remaining.

Kevin Harvick crashed after making contact with Jimmie Johnson on a restart. Johnson went to Harvick’s motorhome to speak to Harvick, but Harvick walked out of the bus and shoved Johnson in the chest with a closed fist.

F1-SINGAPORE GP

Vettel wins in Singapore

SINGAPORE (AP) β€” Sebastian Vettel drove his Ferrari to victory in the Singapore Grand Prix. Vettel’s third win of the season is the 42nd of his career, third all-time in Formula One. Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo (rih-KAR’-doh) was second behind his former teammate.

Reigning world champ and current leader in the driver standings Lewis Hamilton failed to finish the race, leaving him 41 points ahead of Mercedes teammate Nico (NEE’-koh) Rosberg.

PGA-BMW

Day wins again

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) β€” Jason Day is enjoying a tremendous finish to the 2015 season. The winner of the PGA Championship has won his second FedEx Cup playoff tourney with a six-stroke win over Daniel Berger in the BMW Championship. Day finished 22-under-par.

Rickie Fowler completed play at 14-under along with Rory McIlroy. Bubba Watson was 12-under and Jordan Spieth (speeth) was 11-under.

The final FedEx playoff tournament is next week in Atlanta.

GOLF-SOLHEIM CUP

Americans roar back for win

ST. LEON-ROT, Germany (AP) β€” After being infuriated by a call they found unsportsmanlike, the Americans staged the biggest comeback in Solheim Cup history to win the trophy back from Europe. Paula Creamer (KREE’-mur) defeated Germany’s Sandra Gal to complete the turnaround and secure a 14Β½-13Β½ victory for the United States, which had trailed by four points going into the singles.

Long term deal for Klefbom

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) β€” The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenseman Oscar Klefbom to a seven-year contract extension. He had two goals and 20 points in 60 games with the Oilers last season.
