NEW YORK (AP) β The baseball world was saddened last night with news that Hall of Famer Yogi Berra passed away at the age of 90. Berra was a three-time American League MVP and 10-time World Series winner. After his playing days ended he was a manager and in many ways became bigger than life, even having a cartoon character named after him, Yogi Bear.
CHICAGO (AP) β Baseball has its first 20-game winner. Jake Arrieta (ehr-ee-ET’-uh) of the Cubs racked up his 20th victory of the season last night as the Cubs blanked Milwaukee 4-0. Arrieta struck out 11 and went the distance on a three-hitter, leaving him 9-0 with one no-decision and a 0.48 ERA in his last 10 starts.
BEREA, Ohio (AP) β Despite leading the Browns to a win last Sunday, Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL’) is back on the bench for the Cleveland Browns. Josh McCown will start this Sunday against Oakland after passing the NFL’s protocol on concussions. Coach Mike Pettine (PET’-ihn) said Monday that he would start the QB who gives his team the best chance to win.
TOKYO (AP) β The United States won its first men’s volleyball World Cup in 30 years today with a 25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 25-20 win over Argentina. Maxwell Holt scored 18 points as the U.S. team won the event for the first time since 1985 and secured a berth at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
UNDATED (AP) β There are a pair of baseball games this afternoon. The biggest is being played in Houston as the Astros look to keep the heat on first-place Texas in the American League West. The Astros start the day two games back of the Rangers, who are in Oakland tonight.
