Williams, the winner of two U.S. Open titles, has not reached the fourth round at the Open since 2010. Also this afternoon, women’s No. 2 Simona Halep (HAL’-ehp) has a match as do men’s No. 4 David Ferrer (feh-REHR’) and No. 6 Tomas Berdych (TOH’-mahs bur-DEEK’).

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) β€” Michigan State, the eighth-ranked team in The Associated Press pre-season poll, opens its season tonight with a home game against Jacksonville State. A year ago the Spartans had a record of 13-1, including a win in the Rose Bowl. The visiting Gamecocks have had 11 straight winning seasons.

HAMPTON, Georgia (AP) β€” Tony Stewart returns to NASCAR action today with qualifying for Sunday night’s Sprint Cup race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. He skipped three races after hitting and killing a dirt track driver in a race Aug. 9.

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) β€” The IndyCar season comes to an end tomorrow night. Will Power enters the weekend with a 51-point lead in the overall driver’s standings. He needs to finish sixth or better to win the championship. Qualifying for the race in Fontana, California, is today.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) β€” The Los Angeles Angels are back on top of the Oakland Athletics by two games in the American League West. The Angels beat the A’s last night in Anaheim, California, 4-3 with a walk-off win in the 10th.
