Potential Josh Norman Franchise Tag to cost Panthers $13.9 million
The NFL released how much each team would pay a player if they used the franchise tag.
CHARLOTTE, NC (WCCB Charlotte) — If the franchise tag was to be used on Panthers cornerback Josh Norman as heavily rumored, it is going to cost $13.93 million dollars.
The NFL released their final salary cap and franchise tag numbers on Monday. The salary cap will increase to $155 million and tag numbers vary by position–seven of the eleven positions’ tag number is above $13 million.
Josh Norman told WCCB Charlotte at his charity event Friday that he wants to stay in Charlotte — as long as his family is taken care of, presumably by a long term contract.
“It’s been great here and I don’t want that to change,” Norman said. “At the end of the day my three core values are God, la familia and football. And family just nudges out football by just a little bit.”
Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said at his year end press conference that he does not want to develop players for other teams and will use whatever means necessary, including the franchise tag, to keep key players on the team’s roster.
The deadline to apply the franchise tag on a player is 4pm on Thursday. If the franchise tag is used, the team can still negotiate a long-term contract extension until mid-July.
