The Fight in Lancaster County Over Incorporation

The battle over incorporation continues.

As one group fights to incorporate its town, another group is fighting even harder to stop it.

“Flat out said we are going to incorporate Indian Land, and you folks are in it!

People were flabbergasted,” saysΒ Kevin Hall.

Hall is with the group, No Town of Indian Land Incorporation.

They are working to stop incorporation.

The group, “Voters for a Town of Indian Land” created a website and are pushing to incorporate Indian Land. Β But not everybody is happy.

“Indian Land is trying to include our area, Van Wyck into their incorporation and we are really against that,” says Van Wyck resident Gabe Gregory.

Incorporation would mean Indian Land and Van Wyck would become independent from Lancaster county.

Lancaster county councilman Larry Β McCulloughΒ shared his thoughts.

“Is it the time to do it, I think that at some point in time it makes sense that Indian Land could be incorporated but in my opinion I think it’s premature,” says McCullough.

Hall recently moved his farm from Charlotte to Van Wyck.

He’s part of a group that opposes incorporation and says it hurts farmers most.

“It’s infuriating to me, we bought this property one month before fighting about this effort we bought this because it was governed by Lancaster county, South Carolina has protection for farming,” says Hall.

The GregoryΒ family says many in this rural community plan to fight back with their own petition to incorporate Van Wyck.

Which if approved, would keep them separate from Indian Land.

“The reason we signed the petition is so we can set ourselves apart from Indian Land incorporation and they cannot touch what we have going on here,” says Gregory.

The Indian Land Action Council will host a meeting on March 21st at the Del Webb Library at 7pm to allow both sides to discuss the issue.
