NEW YORK (AP) — An award that usually is met with cheers and jubilation instead came with a moment of silence at The Boston Globe. The paper won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news for its “exhaustive and empathetic” coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing and the manhunt that followed.
The Globe’s newsroom was closed to outsiders Monday, the day the awards were announced and a day shy of the one-year anniversary of the tragedy. Staff members marked the announcement by honoring those killed and injured.
The Washington Post and The Guardian also were among the winners for revealing the U.S. government’s sweeping domestic surveillance programs, along with The Oregonian for editorial writing.
Among the arts winners, Donna Tartt won the fiction prize for “The Goldfinch.”
The awards are among American journalism’s highest honors.
