Board of Education Approves Request for Bond

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted to formally request a bond referendum for $805 million in November 2016.

To be on the ballot, the request must be approved by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners.

The bond request would provide capital funding for 29 CMS projects: 10 new schools, four replacement schools, 14 renovation/addition projects and one administrative facility.

Administrative staff currently at the Smith Family Center would relocate to a new administrative facility, and Smith would become a new language magnet campus. Collinswood Language Academy and the current E.E. Waddell Language Academy would be relocated to the new campus. A full list of projects and their individual costs can be found here.

“As our school district continues to grow, so do our needs,” said Superintendent Ann Clark. “These projects will help relieve overcrowding, reduce the number of mobile classrooms and bring much-needed renovation and improvement to some of our older schools.”

Projects funded by the bond would also help CMS expand choice options for students and families.

“Increasing choice options is a top priority — one we’ve highlighted throughout our student-assignment review process,” Clark added. “The 29 capital projects could add an estimated 4,000 seats in high-demand magnet schools and programs.”

The Board of Education vote formally advances the bond request to county officials.
