Rosalynn & Jimmy Carter Legacy In Charlotte Includes 1987 Habitat Build
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It’s a photo many have shared since Rosalynn Carter passed away on Sunday.
The former first lady, hammer in hand, as her husband former President Jimmy Carter looks on.
Nearly 40 years later, that home the two of them helped build, still stands in Optimist Park.
“A lot of people probably don’t know about that,” says resident Silas Nuernberger.
Nuernberger now rents the home and only recently found about about its history.
During that project in 1987, the President and Mrs. Carter led 235 volunteers in the construction of 14 homes.
More recently, Habitat Charlotte hosted this year’s Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter work project.
39 homes are being built on the site of the historic Plato Price School.
