Summer Safety Tips for the Lake

CHARLOTTE, N.C.–Summer time means summer fun, and most of it will take place here, on the water.

Just ask frequent boater Dennis Sayavong.

“We gotta know our limits, we can’t go out there and push them.Β  People get hurt, people die, drown you hear it all over the news,” says Sayavong.

Two recent drownings including 29-year-old Isaiah Cruz, who drowned last week in Lake Norman and Conroy Oliver who drowned in Lake Wylie are reminders of the dangers on the water.

North Carolina Wildlife Sgt Ron Robertson gave this warning for swimmers.

“It has nothing to do with swimming, it has to do with if you are rendered unconscious in a boating accident and thrown out the boat to hit your head, you end up in the water,” say Sgt. Robertson.

Robertson says wearing a life jacket could save your life.

“Making sure that you’re anchored and that you have life jacket on so that you can get back to the boat when you’re ready,” says Sgt. Robertson.

And when putting flotation devices on kids, he says to make sure you read the labels and that they fit correctly.

He also advises boaters not drink while operating a boat.
“Every year we have alcohol related accidents on the lake and fatalities too,” says Sgt. Robertson.

Advice Sayavong says everyone planning to go the lakes this summer should follow.

“If you doing crazy things, people get hurt, people might die.Β  It happens just know what you’re doing play it safe out there,” says Sayavong.
