Another Side of Alleged Assault On NASCAR Driver Mike Wallace Emerges
One Witness Says Both Groups Instigated Fight
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Country music group Rascal Flatts tweeted out to their 1.7 million followers Monday that they were, “So saddened to hear what happened to Mike Wallace and his daughter after the Charlotte concert. Sending love and prayers for a fast recovery.”
It’ll take 5 to 9 months for the NASCAR veteran to heal properly, Wallace’s daughter tells WCCB Charlotte. Lindsey Wallace Van Wingerden says she is sore and bruised. But she says a dentist told her 57-year-old dad he will require dental implants. An eye doctor will determine if he has a detached retina after the alleged attack.
Wallace himself says, “I didn’t provoke a situation, I’m not a fighter, there’s nothing good (that) comes out of it. You look at me today and can tell I didn’t do very good at it.”
All this, after a parking lot brawl between the Wallace family and another family outside PNC Music Pavilion Friday night that is getting lots of attention after Mike’s brother Kenny, also a NASCAR veteran, posted about what he called the “senseless beating” on Facebook.
Mike Wallace also tells WCCB Charlotte, “This should never happen to anyone or any family.”
Two members of the Lucas family as well as another man were arrested and charged. They evidently drove a Lucas Lawn and Landscaping truck to the concert, which helped police find them. 22-year-old Nathan Lucas and 24-year-old Randolph Mangum are charged with misdemeanor simple assault. 29-year-old Paul Lucas is charged with misdemeanor assault on a female.
“It wasn’t assault on a female in any sense and it was never three guys jumping Mike Wallace. That was never the case, it was just an altercation between two groups of guys and they were under the influence of alcohol,” one man tells WCCB News @ Ten anchor Morgan Fogarty. He didn’t want his name broadcast, but says he was at the concert with the Lucas family. He says Wallace’s family equally participated in the roughly five minute altercation. “I heard one guy say, ah, to the mom: ‘Close your eyes before you see your son get his (bleep) beat,'” says the man.
We went to Lucas Lawn and Landscaping in Indian Trail Monday. The gates were closed to us and no one answered the phone. No one has been able to say exactly what happened that sparked the altercation between the Wallace family and the Lucas family. We also called PNC Pavilion and were told someone will call us back.
