Government Employees Learn How to Fight Back Against An Active Shooter

CHARLOTTE, N.C.–In the wake of the Orlando shooting incident at Pulse nightclub.

More and more companies are working to get special training for it’s employees on how to deal with an active shooter situation.

Today, government employees got a chance to learn skills that could save their lives.

So what do you do if there is an active shooter situation?

Charlotte Mecklenburg police gave government employees an active shooter survival course Thursday.

“In light of what is going on around the country we are seeing more and more active shooters,” saysΒ  crime prevention officer John Frisk.

Frisk says between 2000-2013, 60 percent of most active shooter incidents involved pistols; 24 percent rifles and 12 percent of shooters used shot guns.

CMPD says there are the ABC’s of survival.

A stands for avoid, they say to leave immediately and don’t pull the fire alarm it’ll only cause mass hysteria.

B stands for barricade, put your foot up on the door or use an extension cord to block the shooter from coming in your room.

And C stands for counter.

“You may have to grab the gun like we did in the presentation.Β  You may have to fight the person if you ‘re in an open space and you can’t get away,” says Lt Steve Hubert.

Instructors say the ABC’s are important to remember but not always in the same order.

“If you’re walking down the hall and someone pulls a gun you may not have time to avoid or barricade, you may have to go right to counter,Β  the fighting part,” says Hubert.

Instructors say it’s all about being prepared, and aware of your surroundings.

“This can happen anywhere its not one particular place not just workplace happen at a mall if they go back and do what we told the to do the likely hood of survival can go way up,” says Frisk.

The survival course is a free service provided by CMPD for government employees within Mecklenburg County.
