Wainwright only allowed an infield single to Ian Desmond in the second inning and Adam LaRoche’s single in the ninth as the Cardinals outhit the Nationals 14-2 with Washington compounding things by making four errors.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hyun-Jin Ryu (hee-YUHN’-jihn YOO) stretched his road scoreless streak to 26 innings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 to avoid a sweep. Ryu struck out three and walked one on a season-high 112 pitches in seven innings and improved his mark to 3-1.
NEW YORK (AP) — Brad Richards and Derek Stepan scored power-play goals 47 seconds apart in the third period and the New York Rangers beat Philadelphia 4-1 in their NHL playoff opener. The Rangers have beaten the Flyers nine straight times at Madison Square Garden and held Philadelphia to one shot on goal in the final period.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Matt Kuchar (KOO’-char) continued his stellar play from the Masters by putting together a strong start at the RBC Heritage, shooting a 5-under 66 to share the first-round lead with Scott Langley and William McGirt. There also was no major letdown for 20-year-old Masters runner-up Jordan Spieth (SPEETH), who opened with a 69, part of a large group tied for fifth.
