Mugshots Released After 8 Arrested, Dozens Pepper Sprayed In Unlawful Protest On Monroe Road Over The Weekend
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Eight people were arrested and dozens more were pepper sprayed as part of Monroe Road was shut down for an unlawful protest.
The unlawful protest, which started on private property and spilled out onto the road, lasted approximately 10 hours on Saturday. The conflict was centered around the small eastern African country Eritrea about contradicting views on the country’s leadership.
Police said at least 200 people were taking part in the protest. The protesters were given multiple warnings to disperse but refused to leave.
Protesters that refused to move out of the street were pepper sprayed. Police said multiple protesters and officers were treated with injuries sustained from the pepper spray.
At times, the dispersal warnings were met with violence, as protesters began throwing objects and wielding sticks, rocks and other items, according to a news release. A tractor trailer was also intentionally set on fire but was quickly put out.
Eight protesters were arrested, and two firearms were seized. One of the female protesters was arrested for allegedly inciting a riot and striking an officer. Officers seized a firearm from her, as well.
Monroe Road between McAlway Drive and Alliance Drive was blocked off for most of Saturday but reopened after 9 p.m.
