Another NC Death Reported As Result Of Hurricane Matthew, Brings Total To 28
LUMBERTON, NC — The total number of deaths rose to 28 today after Governor McCrory announced that another death had occurred in Lenoir County.
On Thursday McCrory visited Lumberton and provided the public with an update on the recovery efforts happening across areas affected by Hurricane Matthew.
βToday I have witnessed the best of Robeson County with people coming together to help those in need,β said Governor McCrory. βAs we continue to rebuild and recover from this devastating storm, we realize that there are still many who are suffering. We will continue to work with locals, volunteers and our federal partners to ensure our state recovers as quickly as possible.β
The governor visited several sites including West Lumberton Elementary, which is still closed due to flooding. McCrory thanked members of the community, and members of Sandy Grove Baptist Church for helping collect much needed supplies for those hardest hit.
McCrory said that preliminary damage assessments are still underway, but should be finished sometime next week. He also said that a team is putting together a request for disaster relief legislation on both the state and federal levels that will include a projected timeline for a special legislative session. The governor also said he hopes that the session will address the school calendar as well.
