Marcus Jones Sworn In As Charlotte City Manager

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Recently hired City Manager, Marcus Jones, begins his first official day of work today.

Jones was sworn in at a private ceremony with his family.

Jones is the first African-American City manager in Charlotte’s History, and takes over at a tumultuous time for the city following the shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott by police on September 20th, 2016.

β€œCharlotte is a wonderful place and I’m proud to call it my home,” said Jones. Β β€œI’m looking forward to working with the city council to drive their priorities as we continue building our community.”

Jones was previously the city manager for Norfolk, VA where he served from 2011 until accepting the position in Charlotte. Before becoming city manager Jones served as the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Finance and Administration for the city of Richmond, Va., and Assistant City Manager for Norfolk.

Jones relayed his vision for Norfolk as City Manager to the Hampton Roads Business Journal in 2014 saying:

β€œWe have this priority in the city, which is a well-managed government,” he said. β€œWe’re a data-driven organization that’s efficient, effective, accountable, inclusive, responsive and customer-focused. From time to time, I have my senior leadership team recite that and if they can’t recite that they have to do 50 push-ups. Well, the 50 push-ups part isn’t true, but I recite that because we believe it’s part of the fabric of this organization.”

Charlotte, with a population of roughly 800,000 people is more than three times larger than Norfolk, whose population is about 250,000.
