CLOVER, SC — Officials say they have solved the mystery of two old tombstones that were found on a road in Clover back in 2004.

Detectives say two tombstones, one intact and one broken in half, were found on Jackson Lake Lane by a passerby. Calls to area Churches yielded no clues as to where the stones came from, according to officials, so they were eventually placed in evidence.

According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, detectives found the stones lying in the evidence locker while working another case and decided to continue the search. Help and posts from the community eventually helped investigators solve the decade old mystery.

The Luther Parrott marker was removed from Goshen Presbyterian Church in Belmont, NC when the marker was replaced at the passing of Mrs. Parrott, officials say, and the James R. Smith stone was removed from Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Liberty, NC after being broken and also replaced.

The one mystery detectives say they may never get an answer to however, is how the stones ended up on the side of Jackson Lake Lane all those years ago.

Officials are now working on returning the stones to their respective families.
