RALEIGH, NC — A new bill would require The University of North Carolina and NC State to withdraw from the Atlantic Coast Conference if they enact another boycott of the state.
On Monday, House Bill 728 was filed by NC Representatives Bert Jones, Chris Millis, Mark Brody, Jeff Collins, and Justin Burr. The bill is aimed at preventing another boycott like the one that happened in response to HB2 during the 2016-17 season.
In September, the ACC decided to pull several neutral championship games, including the football championship which is usually held at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, as a way to boycott the state’s controversial House Bill 2.
Under the proposed HB728, another boycott would result in both UNC and NC State withdrawing from the conference.
The ACC has said they will consider moving neutral championship games back to the state since the repeal of HB2.
On Tuesday, the North Carolina General Assembly’s website said that the bill had passed its first reading and had been referred to the Committee on Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House.
