CHARLOTTE – As work continues on the I-85 widening project in Cabarrus County, crews will begin setting girders for the South Main St. bridge over I-85 Thursday night, April 27, weather permitting.
To accommodate this work, crews will close one lane on I-85 North at 9 p.m. At midnight, both lanes on I-85 North will be closed. The interstate will be closed in half-hour increments until 6 a.m. Friday, April 28, so crews can safely set the bridge girders.
During the closures, traffic will be detoured from I-85 North to N.C. 73 (Exit 55). Motorists will turn right, heading east on N.C. 73, then turning left to U.S. 29 North back to I-85 North.
The department encourages motorists to pay attention when approaching the work zone, obey the posted speed limit, and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely.
