CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Atrium Health says its patients’ personal information may have been leaked to third-party vendors like Google and Meta. In a notice posted on the Atrium website on Tuesday, they say the leak may have occurred between January 2015 to July 2019. The information was leaked via tracking technologies on Atrium’s Patient Portal on both their website and their mobile app.
Atrium was made aware of the issue in July 2022, but says their first review led them to believe that tracking technologies were not being used in their Patient Portal. They say they reviewed the issue again earlier this year, and realized the tracking technologies were in fact being used on some parts of the Patient Portal.
Atrium says that, “Out of an abundance of caution, we have assumed that all users whose MyAtriumHealth or MyCarolinas Patient Portal was accessed from January 2015 – July 2019 may have been affected.”
In the notice posted online, Atrium says the following information may have been involved:
IP address
Third-party identifier/cookies
Information about a patient’s treatment or provider
First and last name
Email address
Phone number
City
State
ZIP code
Gender
Atrium says, “Based on our review, no Social Security number, financial account, credit card or debit card information was involved.”
They say they have removed or disabled the tracking technologies from their Patient Portal. You can read the entire notice from Atrium here.
