Short snowfall across York County leaves some disappointed
ROCK HILL, S.C. — York County went from snow to sleet to freezing rain very quickly Friday. Many Rock Hill residents expected a winter wonderland, but instead ended up with icy roads and muddy yards.
For a little more than three hours snowflakes did fall around the city, but much less than an inch of it stuck and the rest just melted away. Around 5 p.m. snowflakes turned to freezing rain which coated the area through Saturday morning and left roadways slushy and icy.
The York County Sheriff’s Office reported two cars that slipped off an icy road and into a ditch Friday in the McConnells area. No injuries were reported in either of those accidents.
Several snowplows and SCDOT trucks were seen around the County dropping ice and brine onto roadways to help prevent the ground from icing. York County Emergency Management asked all to stay off the roads if possible. Not many people were seen outside during Rock Hill’s Wintry Storm Warning which lasted from 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. Several people said they were disappointed with the lack of snow, especially since the last time snow fell in the area was three years ago in 2022.
“That was the first time it really stuck and we had enough that they could go out and play in it. I’d like there to be a little more,” said Leigh Wisniewski, a Rock Hill teacher, when asked to compare 2022’s snowfall to Friday’s weather. “I’m a little bit disappointed because I was expecting a whole lot of snow,” said Lou Fudge, a long time Rock Hill resident.
Freezing Rain stopped early Saturday mornings, and more cars could be seen driving around York County.
