Spring surges into Carolinas

The warmest air we've seen so far this year arrives on Tuesday.

Punxsutawney Phil may have called for six more weeks of winter on this Groundhog Day Sunday, but spring will make itself at home in the Carolinas for at least the next five days. Abundant sunshine returns across the Piedmont and Foothills on Monday as southwesterly winds usher temperatures well into the 60s. Areas south and east of the Metro may run close to 70º for the first day of the workweek. Regardless of what happens on Monday, the warmest air we’ve seen all year so far arrives on Tuesday as highs swell into the mid-70s around the Metro.

Clouds will billow into our area by Tuesday evening as a cold front approaches from the northwest. Models are divided on how far south the rain will go, but significant chances for showers – and even a few storms – return by Wednesday night. Opportunities for rain linger into the following weekend as the front stalls near the Carolinas. Despite increasing clouds and rain chances, temperatures should remain on the warm side with multiple opportunities to crack 70º between Wednesday and Sunday.
