UPDATE: The CMPD has charged Marielena Cocinero, 27, with Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle in connection with the death of Steven Lamont McKinney.
Investigators determined Mr. McKinney’s speed was not a contributing factor in the accident.
The case is still under investigation.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On July 16, 2017 at 9:36 p.m., North Division officers responded to a two vehicle crash in the 9400 block of Mount Holly Road at the intersection of Sonoma Valley Drive.
Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle and a motorcycle involved in the crash.
MEDIC arrived and the driver of motorcycle, Steven Lamont McKinney, was pronounced deceased.
The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit and the DWI Task Force responded the scene to conduct an investigation.
The preliminary investigation determined the motorcycle was traveling northwest when the Toyota Venza, driven by Marielena Cocinero entered the intersection from Sonoma Valley Drive.
The motorcycle struck the left front of the Toyota. Alcohol is not a contributing factor for the driver of the Toyota. It is unknown if speed is a contributing factor at this time.
