Mayor Roberts Calls For More Affordable Housing Funds After Recent Fire Highlights Need
CHARLOTTE, NC — Most of the residents who were displaced by an apartment fire in east Charlotte now have somewhere else to stay.
The Red Cross announced it will close the shelter at Albemarle Road Middle School on Monday where many of the impacted residents have been forced to stay after the fire destroyed their homes. 130 people were left homeless after the three-alarm fire on July 17th at the Woodscape Apartments on Farm Pond Lane.
The fire raised more concerns about the lack of affordable housing in the Charlotte area. Mayor Jennifer Roberts is now calling on City Council to increase funding for affordable housing, and has added the issue to the Council’s agenda next meeting.
Roberts says the city is working hard to reach its goal of building 5000 affordable housing units in three years.
