Original Story Posted September 30th:

CHARLOTTE, NC – Neighbors want to know how the body of a missing teen from Virginia ended up in Charlotte.

“It is such a large distance between here and there,” says Joshua Richardson, president of the Garden Park Neighborhood Association.

CMPD confirmed Saturday that the person found dead behind East Stonewall AME Zion Church is 19-year-old Ashanti Billie.

A landscaper discovered her body Friday morning.

Richardson says the community off Beatties Ford Road has had problems in the past.

“We’ve had other instances where bodies have been dumped, as I was saying yesterday in that area. You know, my hope is that someone in this area is not directly involved with the crime. That’s something that’s been on my mind since it happened,” Richardson says.

Tonight in Virginia Beach, Ashanti’s family thanked the community for their love and prayers.

The teen disappeared September 18th, last seen driving into a military base in Norfolk, Virginia.

She worked at a restaurant there.

Days later, investigators found her phone in a dumpster and her car nearby.

What we don’t know is how her body ended up in Charlotte or who killed her.

While Richardson says he is keeping the family in his thoughts, he hopes the killer isn’t from his community.

“Of course my next interest is you know whatever can be done to help find who did this. Make sure they’re brought to justice for the crime,” Richardson says.
