Two 16-Year-Olds In Custody Following Overnight Burglaries In Ballantyne & Huntersville
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two 16-year-olds are in police custody after a string of burglaries overnight into early Monday morning, including seven in Ballantyne and six in Huntersville.
In a span of 30 minutes, the suspects – Lamariay Witherspoon and Douglas Mobley, smashed windows of six restaurants in Charlotte’s Ballantyne area, targeting their cash registers. Several restaurants had emptied their cash draws, limiting what Witherspoon and Mobley could take.
CMPD sent out a description of the suspect vehicle which was matched a short time later after the vehicle was involved in a similar spree in Huntersville. Huntersville Police apprehended Witherspoon and Mobley around 4:30am Monday morning. The suspects ran from the scene after crashing their car in the Beatties Ford Road and Carrington Pointe Drive area. After responding to calls for service involving unknown black males knocking on doors asking for rides to Charlotte, officers were able to locate both subjects and detain them.
One of the two teenagers was in possession of a gun that had been reported stolen in Charlotte. Huntersville Police say the pair broke into following businesses: Subway, Little Caesar’s, Small Cakes, Papa Murphy’s, Pinky’s, and NY Bagel.
CMPD is still working to identify two other individuals involved in the burglaries and is also working with several other agencies to determine if this same group committed other crimes in other parts of the region.
Anyone with information about these burglaries or the other suspects is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Huntersville Police Department at 704-464- 5400.
