Veteran paralayzed in CATS bus attack calling for increased security
CHARLOTTE, NC — James Godfrey feels forgotten by Charlotte city officials after he was attacked on a CATS bus six months ago. It left the homeless Navy veteran paralyzed.
“I wake up with tears in my eyes a lot of mornings because it’s just when I wake up and I come to and I realize that this is what I got to be in and put up with for the rest of my life.,” said Godfrey.
In March, Godfrey was attacked, he claimed over a bookbag. CMPD said Moses Early broke Godfrey’s neck.
Video released by CATS shows Godfrey thrown to the ground and kicked repeatedly. When it ended, Godfrey laid on the ground while the bus driver continued her route.
Eventually the driver stopped and Godfrey was taken to the hospital where he spent the last six months. Angelia Adams has spent that time by her brother’s bed.
“I hear him tell me that he wakes up with tears,” continued Adams, “he didn’t deserve that over a bookbag.
After the death of Iryna Zarutska, Adams and Godfrey are reminding anyone who will listen that her death was not a one off case of violence for CATS.
“CATS needs to step up and get it together. You know, how many more is it going to take,” Adams said of the victims on CATS transportation.
Adams has created a GoFundMe fore her brother to help with expenses.
